Empowering Voters - Defending Democracy

How to Get Involved
There are many ways to get involved. Some members participate in just our educational offerings. Others are more active, by volunteering at voter registration drives and other events, helping in the office, or joining a study committee or an event planning team. You can decide what level of engagement will be best for you.

We value just as much those members whose participation consists of paying their annual dues and making donations to support the League’s work. When the League testifies at County Council, for example, your membership alone provides the political influence needed for citizen impact.

PARTICIPATE
Discussion Groups - League members and guests are invited to gather monthly to examine and discuss researched topics on current and upcoming policies at discussion group meetings generally held monthly in person and on zoom. More here: Discussion Groups.
Trending Topics - These virtual presentations feature expert panelists who discuss pressing issues facing Montgomery County and beyond. They are open to the public and recordings are available. More here: Trending Topics.
Other Events - Attend LWVMC-hosted candidate forums held in election years. We elect our Board and conduct other business at our Annual Meeting (usually in late May or June) and begin planning the program for the next fiscal year at a winter Program Planning meeting.
VOLUNTEER

The League's success depends on the work and financial support of its volunteers. The LWVMC seeks offers time limited and project-oriented volunteer opportunities. Volunteering is a great way to learn more about LWVMC and meet other members.

*Help Register Voters - The LWVMC provides voter registration services at events around the county on an ongoing basis. Learn more here: Help Register Voters

*Volunteering Slots - Volunteers are needed year-round to staff LWVMC voter registration and outreach and other activities at local events. You can sign up to help on specific dates and times here: Volunteering Slot Sign-Up (Members should log in to view and sign up for member only volunteer opportunities).

*Help Wanted - The LWVMC also needs members to assist with short-term projects or support administrative or other tasks on an ongoing basis. Some opportunities may require only one or two hours monthly. Many can be performed remotely and on your own schedule. Check out Help Wanted.

JOIN A COMMITTEE
Making Democracy Work (MDW) focuses on voting, elections and reforms of the election process that are designed to make it fairer and more equitable for all voters, including all mail-in voting. We advocate for redistricting reform in Maryland, ranked-choice voting for Montgomery County offices, and open primaries in Maryland. Please contact mdw@lwvmocomd.org to be added to the Zoom call guest list.

Our Resource Committees include Housing, Education, Transportation/Land Use, Aging, Agriculture, Economic Development, Environmental, International Relations, and Law Enforcement. These committees carry out the League's ongoing work to educate its members and county residents about public policy. They research timely issues and then, based on the findings and consensus, develop our Policy Positions. We then advocate to our elected officials to support our positions.

Other Committees, including Communications, Membership, Finance, Fundraising, and Technology plan and oversee operational and administrative functions necessary to effectively carry out our League's wide-ranging activities.

Most committees meet monthly; meetings are posted to the LWVMC calendar. Being part of a committee is an easy way to get to know a small group of people with similar interests surrounding a topic. You learn a great deal about our county, and there are opportunities to research, write, and meet with elected officials and department experts. Check out our webpage listing all of our Committees.

ADVOCACY
Join the ordinary women and men of the League as they strengthen grassroots democracy by making their voices heard at the local, state, and federal governmental policy levels. Local League members prepare testimony for presentation by our League president. If you are interested in national policy, the Lobby Corps goes to Capitol Hill. We need you to help study the issues, monitor our legislatures, and advocate on League policy issues by writing, calling, and visiting our elected officials.
